This early A.A. San Francisco couple put their Christmas Message onto recordable "records" 78 speed to Bill & Lois Wilson.
For the serious collector or investor. This will likely the only opportunity that you will ever have to actually own an item that was personal to Bill W. The items listed on this website that have come from the personal library of Bill W are the only known items held in the private market that can be authenticated as having been owned by Bill W. I am listing a small collection of audio items records and wire recordings on this website separately rather than as a collection thereby creating the opportunity for several people to own a piece of this historic collection. Because of the rarity of these items it is certain that the value continue increase over time. I’m going to describe these two records as set only because they were originally sent to Bill and Lois by a husband and wife from San. Francisco, CA. Their names are Fred and Amy K and they were early A.A. members and friends of Bill, from the San Franciso area. During the forties it was possible for individuals to make their own personal recorded messages on record discs. I understand it was quite common with servicemen sending messages home. What this couple did for Christmas in 1948 was to each record their own personal message to Bill W and Lois on one of these records. The record from Amy K starts out with her thanking both Bill & Lois for there last visit to San Francisco, and the warmth and courage that they both gave her that day. She also references a story that Bill told about a boomerang while he was there the first time. Then she wishes them a Merry Christmas and all the best throughout 1949 and ever year to come. There is a jacket for this record, which has writing on it that may be that of Bill W., although it’s faded and difficult to make that claim. It simply reads Xmas greetings from Fred & Amy K. The record of Fred is also complete and clear, I’m sure a professional would be able to do a lot with these with the proper digital equipment. Fred’s message starts out with comments that each year in A.A. seems to be just a little better than the year before. He goes on to talk about his gratitude for several things including his dear wife’s recovery from her illness. This is a humble message and turns a bit lighter when his wife starts ringing a Christmas bell. He then wishes Bill & Lois a merry Christmas and ends his comments by quoting his message with what I have learned to be the Irish prayer. “May the road rise up to me you, May the wind be always at your back, and may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.” You’re friend, Fred K. These two very special messages were sent directly to Bill at Christmas 1948 apparently in lieu of a Christmas card. The jacket containing the record from Fred K does not have any writing on it. With some research from my friends in the San Francisco area I have been able to get a bit more information about Fred & Amy K. I have purposely left the last names out of the listed although they are available. Both Fred and Amy were early members in the San Francisco Group and married after sobriety. Amy was actually the group’s stenographer in 1941.
